KAIROS-FILM is Alexander Kluge's own production company, which he started in 1963. In 1962, 26 young directors in Oberhausen announced their intention to create the "new German film". However, there were no producers able or willing to carry the risk of producing this "new film". Thus the authors and directors had to act as their own producers. Many film makers started their own production companies such as Völker Schlöndorff and Reinhard Hauf with Bioskop Film and Werner Herzog with Herzog Filmproduktion. With KAIROS-FILM Alexander Kluge produced major films such as ABSCHIED VON GESTERN, ARTISTEN IN DER ZIRKUSKUPPEL, RATLOS, GELEGENHEITSARBEIT EINER SKLAVIN, DIE MACHT DER GEFÜHLE and ANGRIFF DER GEGENWART AUF DIE ÜBRIGE ZEIT (see also www.kluge-alexander.de). The idea of establishing "publishers' television" started early. Since the start of private television in Germany with RTL and SAT.1, Kluge has been producing his own cultural programs: 10-vor-11, PRIMETIME/SPÄTAUSGABE and NEWS & STORIES.
